"Stand Down Shenanigans" Camp Bearcat, RVN 1967

JamesOLeary

Master at Arms
Although I am still working on the "Can we keep him, Sarge?" diorama, I came up with a thought for a funny diorama and this is what the concept is: Soldiers who have come back from the field are returning to their tent area after drinking for a while and on their way back engage in some shenanigans.

The way it started was I was trying to figure out how to use one of Bravo 6's fairly recent releases of a Soldier urinating in a piss tube. Since I really don't care for figures that are wearing just t-shirts, I converted the figures by sculpting in the jungle fatigue shirt details and replaced the head with one from Hornet. It is topped off by a baseball cap from a head from an Alpine figure.

I thought he looked fairly decent, so I needed to figure out how to incorporate him into a scene. Having him urinating into a piss tube is something that would be expected because the kit came with one. I wanted to do something different and something that was somewhat humorous. Since the Grunts and MPs at Bearcat did not get along very well, I thought it might be funny to have this guy peeing on a MP jeep. The angry MP is about to confront this guy pissing on the jeep. (This is an old model of a vehicle I built a while back that I never used. I will be using the model I am building for the Workhorse Group Build for this diorama)

Then I was thinking about why he might be peeing on the MP jeep. I then remember stories of guys on stand down getting drunk before having to head back to the boonies, so I thought I would make that the reason. Once I build the jeep, or MUTT, I will have a couple of beer cans present so the audience gets that these guys were drinking. I am adding a few of this guys cohorts, one who is trying to half-heartedly stop him from peeing on the jeep, and then one guy who just threw up and his buddy laughing at him while holding a couple of beers. Since these photos have been taken, I have done some more work on these figures and tomorrow I will try to complete the putty work on them.

So that is what I am working on. Thanks for looking.

Not too far from the truth. We were standing in a loose formation one morning at Lai Khe when one of our dogs went up to the First Sgt. who was standing at attention and peed on his shiny boots. :soldier Gary S. XXXXV XX XX

Thanks, Guys. I think this is going to be a fun (and funny) diorama to build.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been doing a bit here and there on the M151. I painted the M151 Tamiya TS-70 Olive Drab (JGSDF) which is pretty close to the Semi-gloss Olive Drab used during the late 1950s through the early 1970s. I drybrushed it with a lighter green (It has been a few weeks, so I don't remember what I used for drybrushing) to bring out some of the details and so it doesn't look so monochromatic.

I sprayed some gloss coat onto the model. I tried to make sure there was no dust on it nor the plate I had it on, but there is dust everywhere in this part of Oklahoma. I don't think it happened when I sprayed to the model, but settled on it afterwards while the gloss coat was still tacky.

Once the gloss coat had a chance to cure for a few days, I started applying the decals. Unfortunately I only had some Testors Decal Set which kind of sucks, but since I was only going to do the registration numbers supplied with the kit (they are only one number off from one of the vehicles of the MP company depicted, so I lucked out and am using some artistic license to just use the kit supplied numbers), two stars on the sides, Military Police sign on the windshield, and the fuel warning sign on the drivers side below the gas cap. I then applied the bumper codes and numbers with dry transfers. After burnishing these into the model, I painted the instruments and lights. I then sprayed gloss coat again. I removed the tape that was covering the spots where the seats will be glued on when they are ready. Again, after spraying, I found a few specks of dust that made there way onto the model. The piece that was on the passenger entryway was removed with a model knife and the guy peeing will be standing there hiding the spot anyway. Then there are two specks on the hood. I plan on placing something on the hood to hide those - probably beer cans or something like that.

You can see the outer portion of parts of the decals, but hopefully they won't be so noticeable when the figures and accessories are put in place. The attention should be on the story being told rather than my poor modeling and painting of the M151. :)

Thanks for looking.
Cheers,

Yes, I removed the frontal images so as not to offend anyone. I really didn't think about it possibly being offensive when I first posted them. I was trying to highlight me sculpting the jungle fatigue shirt as the original figure was wearing only a T-shirt.

I certainly wasn't offended, was just trying to be funny!

a 1/35 scale resin penis shouldn't be offensive.

My apologies James, I do think it is a very different idea and believe it will make an interesting diorama.

No worries. I kind of figured you were joking, but it did make me think that perhaps someone else could be offended by it even though everyone pees and the figure is in no way anything near pornographic :) I do remember looking at the rules at a few shows where dioramas such as this one would not be allowed or would have to be shown in a separate area. My opinion on such things is if one doesn't like something or are offended by something, just don't look at it and move on as other people may like it and may enjoy seeing it.

I got some more done on the M151. I think the seats turned out quite well and are an exact match to the seats we have on our M151 here at our ADA Museum. I still need to add the handset for the radio, put on the windshield, finish the mirror, and add the hood fasteners as well as the antenna which will be added after it is attached to the diorama base. I also need to add the spare tire, but I still need to come up with the tire cover with the 9th MP Company's logo on it.
