First time I've built an IL2 and first time I've finished an AM kit. Engineering is superb IMO, as long as you take the time to read how other folks built theirs AND test fit... especially around the wing-to-fuselage assemblies. All the paint tones are mixed using my favourite (un)reliable Mk.I eyeball method using Humbrol, Xtracolour and Tamiya enamels. I bought a sheet of 'Authentic Decals' but they shattered into molecule sized fragments as soon as they hit the water so I used Eduard 'stars' and the kit supplied bort numbers / guards badge.

Not too much else to add, if anyone wants to ask any questions, make any comments or rain-down any abuse, that's all fine. Have the rest of a great weekend folks... best from NZ.

Bf109E-3 WrN 1304

Assigned to I/JG 76 as White 1. Following an engagement with MS.406's from GC III/7, Oberfeldwebel Karl Hier mistakenly landed at the French airfield at Strasbourg-Woerth. This gave the Allies their first intact example of a Bf109E-3. The French overpainted the German national markings and transferred the aircraft to the Centre d'Essais du Materiel Aerien at Orleans-Bricy for testing. On 02 May 40, they transferred 1304 to the RAF. It was flown from Chartres to Boscombe Down A&AEE. On 14 May it was transferred to RAE Farnborough. There is was repainted in DG/DE over Yellow and received the RAF serial AE479. Returning to A&AEE, it was put thru its paces conducting performance and handling tests until 24 Jul 41. It then was transferred to AFDU for tactical trials before returning to Farnborough on 14 Nov 41 for an overhaul. After repairs, it was transferred to 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight, known as the "RAFwaffe", on 11 Dec 41.

In Jan 42, AE479 was disassembled and crated for shipment to the US. Leaving the UK 07 Apr 42, it reached port in the US 14 May 42. It was reassembled at Wright Field were the USAAC conducted it's own testing and it was displayed at several War Bond events. It crashed during a test flight on 03 Nov 42 and was scrapped on 26 Nov 42.

Oberfeldwebel Hier had been credited with a victory over a PZL P.11 on 05 Sep 39. Following his capture he remained a guest of the French government until the fall of France in Jun 40. Upon release he was assigned to IV/JG 54. His former unit, I/JG 76, was now II/JG 54. OFW Hier was reported missing off the coast of Shoeburyness (Thames Estuary) on 15 Nov 40.
