So what kind of modeler are you?

Lets play a game :D
What kind of modeler are you. What do you like, what do you build, what dont you like?

Now me I'm mediocre, but I love building. Mainly I like aircraft and tanks. I also like figures. Not into cars although I am impressed with some of the stuff I see car modelers do. Not much of a boat person either. I have been a big fan of WWII German stuff for the longest time although I am now really getting into WWI stuff. I'm drawn to colorful paint schemes and designs and stuff that is just odd. I love doing the wood paint jobs and hate doing PE. As I get more brokenI find my skills deteriating which I hate seeing as there is so much cool stuff being made that is unfortunately more demanding. I'm not a rivet counter but I am a detail freak. Great at starting , less than stellar at finishing. I love seeing all models and especially seeing how people do things and solve problems. I've found I can learn stuff off of every build I see and its not just the masters who have shown the way, but even beginners have taught me stuff.

So what kind of modeler are you?? :idonno

Dont be shy :D

If I see something I like modeler I guess

It can be anything There is even a boat or 2 that I wont mind having models of and I get seasick looking at pictures of boats

Also love looking at what the guys do here and be inspired.

I have been modeling for a very long time so I have modeled a lot of different things. I'm drawn to armor, but my first model was a P-36 so venturing into aircraft is likely to happen. I do figures and I like Sci-Fi. Ships have sailed off my work bench(and I don't mean thrown off). So I have done a little bit of everything. I have learned a lot over the years and from some really great modelers. I don't feel like I'm very good. I still mess a lot of things up. I'm still learning and I hope improving. I just keep glueing and painting. Loving every minute of it.

I'm an open minded story teller. While ships and figures are my passion, I'm not afraid to pull out a plane, tank or car and give it a go. Also, for me it is about the journey. The challenge in finding a solution for a problem. It is also a struggle. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder several years ago. As mood swings from hypermania to depression, my level of creativity and desire to be in the studio changes.

I like modelling all subjects...mainly WWII themes...like Terry , I am still learning and trying to improve my techniques...BEST regards for all!

I'm a model-starter.

I'll see something interesting and buy a kit. Then I'll amass research material of the subject while I wait for it. When it arrives, I'll look it over and plan the build, deciding what finish, what AM, etc and order what I'll need while I wash the sprues and start simple construction. I may even get reasonably far into the build before something else shiny will cross my path and I'll start the process again, only adding 'boxing up the current build' inserted between new kit arrival and washing of sprue.

I don't know if it's some deep fear of finishing something or pure lack of focus, but that's who I am.

Revell 1/72 Type IX. Sure, buy it, buy and read the book on U-505, build the kit, do all the detail grinding. Mount it, buy a bunch of plastic for the waves...ooh, Moebius Munsters...build, them, fill and prime, get a bunch of photos together since I want to paint them both monochromatic, wait, Moebius 1/6 B9 Robot. Love that, buy the Starling tech voice and light kit, transparent paints for the buttons, extra fiber optic, set it up for RC, back in the box, I need do the Mars Attacks!. Buy the entire card collection, figure out the LEDs, rework the human victim...

I just got the email that the Wingnut Wings Albatross shipped. I already ordered and received the EZ line based on Bob's heads up regarding rigging. I'm sure I'll have to pickup some stuff for it once it arrives and I'll most likely be buying a ref book in the next week or so. I may even get far into the build befor...

Not sure what Kind of modeler I am .... I started off as child .... of a very young age, my Dad worked in the aviation industry ..... So I was drawn to Aircraft ..... Then I discovered cars we would build them, then play with them ...... shoot them with BB guns run them through puddles of flaming gas-o-line, watch them melt ..... Fire crackers you name it ..... and then we grew up ..... Trains saved my life, Gomez Adams was my hero because He would blow His trains Up on TV .. :cheer: ... Before a Live Studio audience :woohoo: ..... after awhile I started to respect my work .... but was never more than a O.O.B. modeler ..... So I went dormant for a bit .... I had built a B-58 I think it was a Lindberg Kit .... I also remember building the Polaris Sub that shot Missiles out of two of the tubes .... What I remember is that it was the cut away .... and I had painted it Purdy good inside .... I also built 'ol Ironsides then Dad & Mom separated ..... and I quit modeling ..... :eek:ldguy I never quit I'd mostly build a Model Railroad or try to .... went to the service got out got a job as a field service engineer (lots of schooling) in Mirco film & graphic arts ..... then life happened .... I started building Homes and found myself out of a job, owning a antique store .... well the models came in the front door and went to the house .... I got a Job at a Hobby store selling model trains on ebay (Working out of a 125 year old train station) the dude owed me money & was going to close down, I took in in product, opened up a hobby shop because I had grown up as a child living in a hobby store ...... Right know I will build anything or attempt to build anything nothing is off limitsto me I love styrene .... I love After-market .... I will even do PE with more practice ....... I like modifying models using Magnets, led's, fiber-optics or I even have ideals for air & water use ..... :eek:ldguy

Really interesting reading guys.

Jeff, don't forget the turnbuckles. (y)

Me, I'm not even mediocre I think, I can see the flaws and mistakes all over my builds. I'm into the modeling, love it all short and tall...Land air ships at sea. I'm not likely to build a Sci-Fi subject, nothing really sparks my interest.

My weakness is patience, I want instant results and it has cost me several times :bang head Paying attention to details and finishing the job is also a problem. Get sooo close and just don't seal the deal. Gotta work on that.

Hmm, I'm an open-minded , middle of the road type of modeler. My youth was filled with cars, tanks, ships & planes but, gave it up for awhile & got back into it after like 25+ yrs. thanks to family history research & learning of my uncle Chuck, a Naval Aviator lost in Vietnam flyin' the RA-5C Vigilante. I never heard of it & so, researched it & found out it was a cool lookin' jet & unarmed! That's what got me back into the hobby!
Now my main poison is the aircraft he had flown during his career & the ships he flew off of. (Essex, Forrestal, Ranger) but, do dabble in Star Trek, WWII aircraft & ships that catch my eye or, have a family connection to.
I use pe & resin bits when I can afford them even though I'm still fairly new to them. Always looking to learn how others do them...

Bob, We are our own worst critics... We know the flaws that others may not even see... :facepalm :drinks

My dad started me off when I was 6 or 7, and I modeled up until I was about 15 when I completely got out of the hobby and sold everything off. I mostly modeled cars at that point but dabbled in just about everything.

Then my wife suggested I try and take it up again as a hobby in 2008. I bought a Revell P-38 and fumbled my way through it, brush painting it as I had no air brush, and began to read some of the online forums to learn a few new tricks of the trade.

I quickly developed a love for float planes and flying boats and decided to focus mainly in those builds, in 1/48 (I just find 1/72 too small and 1/32 too large). When building, I usually start off well, then have a long hiatus (mostly because of sanding and other problematic stages of the build), and then finish up after awhile! The biggest problem is staying focused on one subject, as I will usually get a neat idea for a project or see a cool scheme for a particular plane and then spend time imagining how I will build it!

I consider myself a work in progress, I am still trying different techniques I learn from others and on these forums and hope to someday really build a show stopper! Every build is a learning experience though!

:)

Like most of you I started out as a youngster and then took a long hiatus before getting back into it ten years ago.

I build mostly in the one true scale 1/72 and stick mostly to WWII stuff but I will build anything, land, sea and air. I did have a period before my hiatus where I built a lot of 1/700 ships. I build mostly oob and don't get into research or rivet counting. I just build 'em. I'll leave the critiquing to others.

I am building my first sci fi right now and I'm even trying to light it up which is also a first for me.

I enjoy seeing all of your builds and learning new things but consider.myself mediocre at best.

I've always wanted to do up the ST Enterprise in a Space Drydock using magnets... and have it all lit up. I think that would be so kewl (y) :D

This is a pretty cool thread.

I've been building models since I was 5 years old. A friend of the family gave me a Monogram snap-tite Space Shuttle kit for my birthday that my dad tried to help me build. He sat at the table for 5 minutes before he got frustrated and gave up. That's when I stepped in and finished it myself. Or at least thats how it is in my memory, I'm sure the story is different from his point of view. Also as a kid I was obsessed with Top Gun and the F-14 Tomcat so that added fuel to the fire. Ever since then I've been building nonstop. Where people usually take a break in their late teens and early 20's, I kept going. Through girlfriends, punk bands, and college I still kept building. Its a part of who I am and I don't care what people think (which is pretty punk rock in itself, if I do say so). Now I mostly build US Naval Aviation subjects with an extra special interest in F-14's. As far as my still level, I'll let you guys be the judge of that since I'm still fairly new on this forum.

Yeah the one thing I was wondering in the TG movie ..... It's I hate it when that happens .... all the people on TV say "I hate when that happens .... looking forward lots of input & friends Here myself as I'm a OOB until I discovered the net and all the great models out there ..... And Ed if you need any help making the Enterprise float let Me know ..... it is possible !!! ..... :woohoo: :eek:ldguy :hmmm
