An unlikely escort

As long as you are using decent references all is good Chris!

Always better to say something and at least bring it to light early on rather than not say anything and everyone wish you had. With as many holes as there are in the B-17 interior coloring is going to be important.

All of this looks magnificent! Brilliant job on the interior painting. However, one thing kinda strikes me as a bit off: I would think the pilots would have already removed the oxygen masks. At the time Franz caught up with them, they were flying very low and; if I recall, their oxygen system was pretty well inoperative. Franz said he could clearly see the fear in Charlie's face when he looked across at him.

Take that with whatever grain of salt you wish; I know you are doing a magnificent job and will do this display extreme justice. I commend you for this and bow in the presence of greatness. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

Thank you.
And yes you're correct on the O2 masks, I commend you on the sharp observation. unfortunately I am working with what I have on hand and I used the head I had with no mask on the radio operator before I realized I would need 3 of them! I guess I could try breaking it off the figure and casting copies. I'll see how it goes with that. I'm not even sure I'll make it to the end of the build at this point, looooots of grinding and cutting.

This would be a difficult enough project if it were 1/48, you are doing a size that "requires" attention to every detail. Be patient and go step by step. Even a little work a day on it is progress! I didn't know about the oxygen mask thing myself so do a little and post lots of photos. By doing that you can pick the minds and knowledge of everyone on MA and there is a LOT of know how and knowledge here. We would all love to see you do a fabulous job on this, and will gladly forward every scrap of info we can come up with.

Sometimes it is well worth going the 2 steps back just for your own piece of mind. Bob Letterman tore the whole corner off his current diorama to change it in a big way. I had a build many years ago that fell apart when I stripped the paint off it. When I went back and finished it, it earned a first place at IPMS Regionals.

When the man is right he's right!...plus I remembered I had a resin crew set for the HK Models B-25 that I built, painted, but never used on a dio. (that may or may not ever be completed for that kit)
In any case I beheaded a couple of B-25 crew members from that build and transplanted them here. My painting skills may have improved since then...maybe not, In any case, true now to the book cover (which is what I'm going for) the flight crew is now 02 mask-less. Thanks to the Duke for pointing it out and reminding me!

You're very welcome Chris and thanks for the compliment. Congrats on finding the new heads. I think the pilots look better now, but Charlie needs to look a bit more scared. LOL! :D

As Paul said, you are doing a magnificent job and as necessary; take it nice and slow if you need to. This does need to be done if only to honor the men who experienced this. I am thrilled to be following this.

Thanks for the encouragement...I'm still having a tough time "wrecking" this nice kit!
I've poked a few more holes in the left 1/2, other than this I may make a couple of large holes (once I get an idea of the overall idea.) The book cover shows at least 3 massive holes in the fuselage and wings, besides the missing left stabilizer.
I've added a sheet patch to the wing root area

I read back over the part about where they were doing the evasive maneuvers dodging the fighters, it's amazing that thing stayed in the air. You're doing great Chris, press on!!! :popcorn

Doing good Chris! Just follow the drawings, pictures and any photos you can find. The end result will be very worth it!

I've added some structure that may be visible from all the holes in the skin.

the wing halves will be getting closed up next and I'll move on to the destruction...pardon me, I mean detailing the flack damage to the other fuselage half
Thanks for looking

That looks excellent Chris!

If you need them, I have a bunch of photos I downloaded from Duxford when they did a tear down/maintenance/restore of their display B-17G. While there are a number of things different, there are a whole lot more that are the same. PM me if there is some structure or detail in particular that you need as there are almost 1500 photos in my reference folder.

These are just a few of the main wing and one of the horizontal stabilizer. Some are small and some of the photos I have are extra high resolution.
